So what is Auger Mining?
​
In very simple terms, the Auger Miner is a large horizontal drill that uses a cutting head and auger flights (i.e. drill rods) that are drilled into the coal seam, allowing horizontal holes to be drilled to a depth of up 200 metres and beyond (twice the length of a football field) if the seam conditions allow it. The rotation of the connected auger flights convey the coal out of the hole onto a transverse chain conveyor at the front of the machine, which then ejects the coal onto the pit floor. A front-end loader then gathers this coal and creates a nearby stockpile, ready to be sent to the ROM stockpile. It's a simple process but requires significant attention to detail and years of highwall mining experience in order to achieve the best results we can for our clients.
